Doyle and colleagues offer a nice treatment of this special topic. Though there are other books that discuss various aspects of diazo and related compounds, this book specializes in the synthesis and applications of diazocarbonyl compounds, useful as intermediates in organic chemistry. The use of modern catalytic procedures is especially emphasized. There are many complete references to the original journal articles at the end of each chapter. Also, throughout in easy-to-find boxes actual laboratory synthetic experimental methods are given. Though the book's use could save the reader a trip to the library, the safety hazards presented by this class of compounds suggest that original references with detailed data should be studied before laboratory work commences. This is a complete treatment of a special topic, which is still only a part of the field of synthetic organic chemistry. Graduate students through professionals. R. J.
