Complaints about indoor air quality, ranging from discomfort to severe illness, are becoming increasingly common. This is understandable, since people spend 90 percent or more of their time indoors, and modern buildings contain many possible air pollution sources. In addition, energy conservation efforts have decreased ventilation rates, making it more likely that pollutants will accumulate. As a result, problems ranging from environmental tobacco smoke to sick building syndrome are often discussed in the media. This volume, based on a 1994 symposium on indoor air quality, is an up-to-date and extensive revision of the first edition (ed. by Gammage and S.V. Kaye, 1985), with a different format. Instead of discussing individual pollutants, the papers are organized around major health problems, including odors and irritants, respiratory and allergenic agents, neurotoxins, and carcinogens. A fine overview of a topic that holds considerable interest for both the general public the research community. Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and researchers. H. E.
