"Donizetti's manuscript of Maria Stuarda is lost ... There are at least four non-autograph manuscript scores, ... and several versions of Buondelmonte, a new opera with a libretto by Pietro Saladino and Donizetti's music for Maria Stuarda, performed in Naples on 18 October 1834. ... [There are] a large number of variants. The present recording offers a composite text. While omitting the 1835 overture, it uses the orchestration of the 1835 version and introduces a number of the Malibran variants of that year"--Nora Bates.
