Silent film performers : an annotated bibliography of published, unpublished and archival sources for over 350 actors and actresses /

This latest volume in the McFarland series of silent film titles expands on George M. Katchmer's Eighty Silent Film Stars: Biographies and Filmographies of the Obscure to the Well Known (CH, May'92). Entries for 350 performers, an extensive annotated bibliography on silent film, a directory of collections related to silent films, and a name index make up the volume. Performer entries include brief biographical/career data, books written by the performer, and general, biographical, pictorial, and dissertation material. Periodical literature is listed in chronological order with year and month but no pagination. Obscure published sources, media, archival materials, and clipping files are also noted. Although most well-known performers and many lesser-known stars are included, some gaps exist, e.g., Erich von Stroheim and Ethel and Lionel Barrymore. Intended for researchers, the volume is best used by film buffs in conjunction with Ephraim Katz's The Film Encyclopedia (CH, Jan'95), which includes more detailed biographical background and filmographies.
