This set is composed of monographic chapters logically organized by ring size and heteroatom content. Each chapter presents a collection of general and specific classes of compounds, general types of reactions, specific and named reactions, syntheses, theory, spectral and other chemical and biological properties, as well as applications to pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and polymers. All authors are experts in their respective areas of research, and the series is packed with informative structural drawings and equations that allow for quick referencing. More than 80,000 subject entries have been categorically indexed. There is little overlap in content with the previous series, Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry (CH, May'85). As with all review series, this new set is not all-inclusive but, nevertheless, serves as an excellent starting point for those just beginning and those who are experts in the field. This valuable treatise is truly a treasure to all who are involved with research and education in heterocyclic chemistry. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. D. A.
