As jazz research becomes more accepted in the US, jazz scholar Meadows' vastly improved revision of his 1981 bibliography (CH, Mar'82) should reach a wider audience. This new edition, which retains only a limited number of entries from the 1981 version, diverges from other jazz research guides in that Meadows annotates all entries; includes research, performance, and teaching materials; and offers a wide selection of videos, journals, and recording collections to supplement print collections. Wisely, the author (San Diego State Univ.) has limited his scope to books published 1920-95 (periodicals and newspapers being too abundant), providing straightforward access through 14 broad categories subdivided into specialized fields (e.g., early jazz, jazz dance). The subject index offers numerous reference points beyond these categories and will be welcomed by researchers seeking information on particular artists. On the downside, many biographical and autobiographical books are missing: Nina Simone's I Put a Spell on You (1991), Frank C. Taylor's Alberta Hunter: A Celebration in Blues (1987), LeRoi Jones's (I.A. Baraka's) Blues People (1963). Regardless, although Meadows is not comprehensive, he provides the average music collection with a handy compendium, most useful in conjunction with Gary Carner's Jazz Performers (CH, Dec'90) and Barry Kernfeld's The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz (CH, Apr'89). Recommended for all libraries serving music and popular culture programs. A. J. Adam; Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University
