The first part of this insightful double portrait comprises Kantor's exhilarating free-form writings on objectness and the spatial dimension of memory; their imaging in such theories as the autonomous and informal theaters, theater of death, and the room of imagination; and their progenitors in surrealism, constructivism, and happenings. Kantor meditates upon the means of empowering abstraction, the created reality (reality via reality) that eschews and escapes illusionism. The book concludes with Kobialka's perceptive commentary on Kantor's scenic solutions in heterotopic memory space, in which he reconciled the artist's self and the artistic other. The text is illustrated with production photos and the paintings of Kantor and related artists and includes a chronology, notes, and bibliography. Advanced undergraduate; graduate; faculty; theater preprofessionals and professionals.
