A summary of the world's scientific evidence concerning the relationships between physical activity, fitness, and health, from the Second International Consensus Symposium on Physical Activity, Fitness, and Health, held in Toronto, Canada, in 1992. The symposium was conducted to broaden and clarify the scientific positions taken in the first meeting in 1988, and included 70 of the world's foremost scientists working in these areas; they produced consensus statements on over 70 specific topics related to physical activity, fitness, and health. The three editors were important participants in the symposium and are noted scientific leaders in relevant fields of study. The major areas of the symposium are very inclusive and encompass (1) a theoretical model of physical activity, fitness, and health; (2) assessment in physical activity, fitness, and health; (3) determinants of physical activity; (4) human adaptation to exercise; (5) physical activity and disease; (6) physical activity and the life cycle; (7) risks of activity and inactivity; and (8) dose-response issues. Each topic includes a summary of scientific evidence and future research directions. An outstanding resource. Advanced undergraduate through faculty. A. W. Jackson; University of North Texas
