Those looking for a compact guide to lead users through the complexities of census materials should add this book to their collection. Barrett outlines how the 1990 data were collected and how they are alike and different from the 1980 and earlier censuses. He reviews the design of the 1990 census, explains the new geographic data, and discusses the many forms reporting from the census has taken, from print and microfiche to computer tape and CD-ROM. Collection and statistical methods are summarized so the reader can understand the limitations and value of census information. Any use of census data requires that the researcher devote some time to understanding the terms and concepts used. Researchers willing to do this will find this book to be a very valuable guide. The novice will get help in finding the proper source; the experienced researcher will get a good review and be guided to other works for more complex problems. A worthy supplement to census information in all academic collections. R. A. Hawkins; Wright State University
