Hambrey presents an up-to-date, overall treatment of this ever-fascinating topic. A good historical introduction is followed by chapters on glacier dynamics, erosional processes and landforms, environments of terrestrial deposition, fluvioglacial processes and landforms, glaciolacustrine processes and sediments, and glaciomarine processes and sediments. The major emphasis (82 pages out of a total of 270) on glaciomarine processes and sediments enables the synthesis of a large amount of new material that has not, hitherto, been treated so extensively. Photographs are numerous and outstanding; the line drawings are well executed. Hambrey is a distinguished glaciologist with unusually widespread field experience. His writing style is outstanding, and he has been meticulous in defining the often confusing array of terms and concepts in this research field. Excellent glossary; useful bibliography and index.
