Books on plant breeding are usually difficult reading, but this book by three knowledgeable professionals is an exception. The format is readable and easily understood; contents are complete and heavily referenced. A feature that this reviewer liked was the detailed figure captions that presented new information, not the usual "rehash" of the text material. Figures usually concentrate on specific plant applications, while the text emphasizes general concepts and principles. Although this book does have one chapter on cell and molecular biology, it is essentially concerned with conventional plant breeding. This is not meant to be critical; these newer techniques by necessity are combined in practice with conventional methods. A highly recommended work for libraries maintaining agricultural, horticultural, and other plant science collections. Upper-division undergraduate; graduate. R. P. Poincelot; Fairfield University
