Oxford Textbook of Sports Medicine editors M. Harries, C. Williams, W. D. Stanish, and L.J. Micheli have arranged topics in seven sections, each with several chapters. P. Astrand, an esteemed exercise physiologist, supplies an interesting introduction. The first section treats sports science and is divided into five subsections: physiology, nutrition, kinesiology, psychology, and assessment of performance. A second section deals with sport, and the environment; a third covers medical aspects of sport, e.g., physiological adaptations to exercise, illness in sport, and miscellaneous medical questions. The fourth section discusses acute sport injuries: knee, shoulder, and ankle; chronic and overuse sport injuries; and injuries of special groups, e.g., aging, development, and athletes with disabilities. A final section treats special problems and injuries. This book, with its wealth of information, is an excellent source for anyone who exercises. Upper-division undergraduate through professional. A.
