Root-Bernstein has put his scientific reputation on the line because he challenges current thinking about AIDS that does not fit the picture, e.g., prostitutes rarely contract HIV; there is no doubt that AIDS is at least a century old. The traditional dogma that HIV is the sole cause of AIDS is severely damaged by this pathbreaking book which shatters many assumptions and reopens fundamental questions about AIDS. The failure to explain AIDS accurately raises the possibility that experts are not addressing the causes and cures of AIDS appropriately. The tragic cost of this failure is the constant rising death toll from AIDS. New avenues of research will center on multifactorial models, co-factors, synergistic immune insults, and autoimmune mechanisms that cause AIDS. Rethinking AIDS presents a true understanding of the nature of HIV infection and AIDS. Using fine illustrations and readable writing, Root-Bernstein focuses on specific factors that increase the risk of contracting AIDS. HIV-infected readers will receive hope that they may survive the infection by eliminating controllable factors. Faculty; professional. R. H. Davis; Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine
