An excellent book that attempts to bring together in one guide the procedures and concepts used by environmental scientists in the field of microbial ecology. It is specifically written for individuals who are engaged in the development of new microbial products and those conducting environmental risk assessments of released microorganisms. The book covers a wide range of techniques and methodologies. Especially emphasized are methods to identify and enumerate microorganisms, evaluate gene transfer, and to determine the fate of microbes in air, soil, and water. Concomitant with the emphasis on methods, the book also stresses the risks involved in the environmental release of microorganisms. The volume is well illustrated with many figures and tables; extensive bibliographies are found at the end of each section. Highly recommended for those working for biotechnology companies, research institutes, and federal or state regulatory agencies.-P. C. Radich, University of Indianapolis
