The first of this book's two main sections is devoted to the career and artistic development of Lucas van Leyden. The second contains a well-researched catalogue raisonn'e of 46 attributed paintings, organized according to subject i.e., Old and New Testament, saints, portraits, history painting, and allegorical genre scenes. There is also an additional catalog section with 19 erroneous attributions. The book includes 80 black-and-white illustrations of mediocre quality that are often too small to adequately illustrate the discussion. Most arguments proceed along the traditional stylistic and iconographical lines, with limited attention to the contemporary socioeconomic and cultural context. In addition, the lingering problems in Lucas's biography have not been solved, including the still-debated problem of his early birth date, among others. Unfortunately, no transcripts of original documents were provided in a separate appendix, which is an essential reference feature for this type of study. Though this book offers a new appraisal of Lucas van Leyden's painted oeuvre in a rather traditional fashion, it is nevertheless a valuable research tool for any student needing a comprehensive and reliable update of the scholarly discussion surrounding any of Lucas's paintings.
