As Professor Emeritus of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts and compiler of a companion volume, Racism in the United States: a Comprehensive Classified Bibliography (CH, Oct'90), Weinberg is uniquely qualified to produce this mammoth work. It contains 12,000 references to monographs, journal articles, book chapters, dissertations, and published papers relating to the worldwide study of racism and other inhumanities (antisemitism, colonialism, sexism, slavery). The scope is comprehensive, covering 135 countries as well as devoting a chapter to each continent, a short section to the ancient world, and a section to other related bibliographies. The emphasis is on recent literature written in English, French, German, and Spanish, with well over half the references dating from the 1980s through 1990, and with scattered references prior to 1960. There are no annotations and only a short introduction. The author index is complete; the thematic subject index enables the researcher to locate references to broad topics (e.g., sexism) country-by-country. Although other comprehensive international bibliographies exist for some of the related topics in this work, researchers concerned with racism will find no comparable compilation. G. B. Thompson; Cleveland State University
