Franklin and Dusseault describe a wide variety of rock engineering applications. Divided into two sections, rock engineering at the ground surface and rock engineering underground, the book is primarily oriented toward civil engineering and mining engineering applications. Modern techniques and equipment for constructing rock engineering projects are described. The book could be used as a text for both undergraduate and graduate students and as a reference for practitioners. The many illustrations included are very helpful to the reader in visualizing rock engineering concepts and conditions. Although the book is aimed at providing breadth of coverage rather than detailed coverage, an extensive list of references is provided for those readers interested in more detail. Both authors have extensive experience in teaching and consulting in the area of rock engineering. Highly recommended for university libraries serving civil engineering, mining engineering, and geological engineering programs.-D. B. Stafford, Clemson University
