A beautiful publication with an exceptional collection of photographs, more than 80 in full color and a large number in black-and-white (taken by Hambrey and Alean, in almost every corner of the world), superbly reproduced and selected with great professional skill. They and the accompanying text deal with the classic topics germane to the subject: glaciers past and present; glacier nourishment; glacier types; fluctuations; movement; ice and water relations; icebergs; ice and volcanoes; impact on the landscape; wildlife; and climate and civilization. The text is largely nontechnical and no bibliographic references mar the flow of the exquisite English language presentation. The authors are glaciologists of high competence, an essential ingredient, since there are several such books that do not remotely compete. The only real competition is A. Post and E.R. LaChapelle's Glacier Ice (CH, Feb'72), now out of print. This could be an important supplementary work for upper-division undergraduate studies in glacial geology or physical geography. Good index; valuable glossary. General; undergraduate. J. D. Ives; University of California, Davis
