Continues both in scope of coverage and in format Kenneth Friedenreich's Christopher Marlowe: An Annotated Bibliography of Criticism since 1950 (1979). Brandt offers separate, alphabetically arranged listings for editions, selected bibliographies, and concordances (17 items); novels based on Marlowe's life (3 items); about 500 general critical and biographical studies; studies of the individual plays (some 131 for Doctor Faustus) and of Marlowe's poetry and translations; and non-English-language criticism (predominantly French, German, and Japanese). Coverage is critically selective: "Anything included here contains explicit discussion of Marlowe or his works" (p. xiv). Book and production reviews are excluded; entries for unpublished dissertations record listings in Dissertation Abstracts International. Consistently full and objective annotations are helpful in distinguishing major studies; entries for non-English criticism and dissertations, however, are unannotated. Unusually specific subject indexing approximates a kind of literal keyword access that advanced scholars might find informative. ("Kiss," for example, references two articles that focus on Faustus kissing Helen, although Brandt admits other studies touch on the same scene.) Inexperienced users dismayed with the single listing under "Characterization" might have benefited from some selective subject cross-referencing. Brandt's compilation is nonetheless convenient for advanced study of Marlowe. J. K. Bracken; Ohio State University
