| Summary: | The objective of this paper is to provide an empirical characterization of the determinants of current account balances for a large sample of industrial and developing countries. The approach taken here is to view the current account from the longer-run perspective of saving-investment balances. Thus, the roles of the "fundamental" determinants of saving and investment levels are emphasized rather than factors influencing the short-run dynamics of the current account. Using both cross-section and panel data estimation techniques and an extensive dataset that covers industrial and developing countries, we characterize the main determinants of medium-term current account variation across countries and over time.
