The paper however was sent to the Lancet and appeared in that journal on the 20th January. In the Lancet of the 10th February a criticism of my "Notes" by Dr E. A. Parkes was inserted. On the 19th February a reply to this criticism was addressed by letter to the Editor but was rejected on account of its length. A short summary was substituted and published in the Lancet of the 7th instant. But as the abridged letter very imperfectly treats of questions of great practical importance at the present time I adopt this method of making known the original letter which is as follows.
