Summary:Guanabara Bay is one of the main postcards of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. Its landscape, with majestic mountains in close contact with the sea, is of unparalleled beauty and known worldwide. It plays an important ecological and socioeconomic role for the city of Rio de Janeiro and its surroundings. Its waters and marginal environments (including sandy beaches, mangroves, rocky shores) provided habitats for a diverse flora and fauna. Its potential use for fishing, boating, port services and recreation has been explored since the early days of colonization. However the impacts and current state of degradation are compromising many of these uses. In the last three decades fishing has decreased by 90%, the mangrove area has been reduced by 50%, several beaches are considered unsuitable for bathing and the degradation of the banks results in habitat loss resulting in fauna and flora. Therefore, the recovery of the Bay, besides being ecologically relevant, brings economic and social benefits. What we want with this book about Guanabara Bay is to present the current situation of the bay in terms of water quality, flora and fauna components, their temporal and spatial quantitative variations. In other words, we aim to elaborate a basic document to synthesize the information about the ecological characteristics of the bay, based on the data obtained from the monitoring programs, as well as data from past research. We are concerned with elaborating a work, both academic, for teachers and researchers, and for dissemination to society and those interested in knowing the answer to the initial question, What is Guanabara Bay?.
