Summary:The Fortress of San Carlos in Perote, also called Castillo de Perote, Castillo de San Carlos, Fuerte de San Carlos or Prison of Perote is an 18th century military building located in the town of Perote in the State of Veracruz. Author Broca Castillo explains the fundamental architectural elements of the old military building with a detailed account of each of the historical moments of the fortress, from serving as military garrison and school (the origin of the Heroico Colegio Militar), its transformation into internment camp of Nazi agents in Mexico, during the World War II and serving as a prison from the early 20th century until 2007. On June 20, 2007 the Governor of Veracruz gives custody of the Fortress of San Carlos to the H. Ayuntamiento de Perote for safekeeping, leaving it open to the public and as a tourist attraction.
