Item Description: | For solo voices and basso continuo. Preface and critical report in Italian and English. "Urtext." "Comprises eight volumes and features intonations of the first fifty Psalms of David, based on the Vulgate translation and paraphrased in Italian ... by the Venetian poet Girolamo Ascanio Giustiniani ... Scored for one, two, three and four solo voices, Canto, Alto, Tenore, and Basso, in various combinations, that regularly alternate with the same vocal parts in ripieno; only eleven of the Psalms exclude alternations between solo and ripieno parts. Three of the Psalms also include concertante strings: a cello in Psalm XV, and two violette in Psalm XXI and L. In each Psalm the vocal parts are accompanied by a figured bass line, except for Psalms XXXVI, XLIII and XLVIII, each of which bear the indication Da Capella, that is, to sing chorally from beginning to end as intended by the composer, who also stipulates that violoncelli, cembali and contrabbassi double the Basso's vocal part"--Vol. 1, p.
