In den 1920er-Jahren wandte er sich in farbgewaltigen Arbeiten der menschenleeren Landschaft zu und bewegte sich zwischen 'Neuer Sachlichkeit' und 'Magischem Realismus.' Während des Nationalsozialismus entstanden Stillleben mit magisch-entrückter Stimmung. Nach dem Krieg widmete sich der Künstler erneut seiner Ethnografica-Sammlung und adaptierte sie in seinen Gemälden.
