Summary:Religious and civic leader Vernon M. Fareed was born on December 31, 1953, in Norfolk, Virginia. At the age of eighteen, Fareed joined the Nation of Islam and converted to Islam from Christianity. In 1983, he began writing as a columnist for the New Journal and Guide newspaper. Fareed served as manager and president of Salaam Investment Group, LLC. By 1976, Fareed earned the title of Imam at Masjid William Salaam. He received his honorary doctorate degree from Bishop Jessie Featherston at Trinity Mission University in 1997. He received the National Humanitarian Award for his community work and involvement from the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities in 2006. He became chair of the Tidewater Chapter of the VCIC in 2007, and sat on the state board. In 2005, Imam Fareed became the first Muslim of African-American descent to offer the invocation for the Virginia State Senate.
