Summary: | Pharmacist and government administrator Edgar N. Duncan was born on February 1, 1932, in Monessen, Pennsylvania. In 1954, Duncan would be the first black student to graduate from Duquesne University with his B.S. degree in pharmacy. Upon graduation, Duncan met Lauraine Thorne, and the two were married that same year. In 1956, Duncan became the first black student to graduate with his M.S. degree in hygiene from the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health. Duncan began working in the U.S. Public Health Service's Commissioned Officers Corps, and in 1972 became the first pharmacist to be promoted to surgeon general. Apart from acting as surgeon general, Duncan began to work with Pitt's Partners in Education Consortium. This four year program has encouraged black youth to pursue professions in health. In 1990, Duncan earned his Ph.D. in higher education administration from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Duncan passed away on December 17, 2011.
