520 | |a Nurse and trombonist Helen Elizabeth Jones Woods was born in 1923 and adopted by Laurence Clifton Jones, the founder and director of Piney Woods Country Life School. Woods was a member of the school's Cotton Blossom Singers and the Swinging Rays of Rhythm, bands which raised money for the school. In 1941, several of the girls formed the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. The band included Pauline Braddy, Willie May Wong, Edna Williams, Ernestine "Tiny" Davis and saxophonist Vi Burnside. They were the first African American women to tour with the United Service Organizations (USO) during World War II. After the band dissolved in 1949, Woods served as a licensed practical nurse at Omaha's Douglas City Hospital for twenty-three years. She was the mother of four children including media mogul, Cathy Hughes. Woods was inducted into the Omaha Black Music Hall of Fame in 2007. | ||
