In the mid-1960s, Gregory became involved in the Civil Rights Movement and ran unsuccessfully in elections against Chicago Mayor Richard Daley in 1967 and against President Richard Nixon in 1968. A nutrition guru, Gregory was the creator of the Bahamian Diet Nutrition Drink. He ranked eighty-first on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time.
