| 520 | |a Medical doctor Dr. Leslie D. Duke, Sr. was born on March 21, 1924, in Washington, D.C. and attended D.C. Public Schools. He entered the U.S. Army in November 1943, and fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima before being discharged as a sergeant in April 1946. After the war, Duke enrolled at Howard University, where he earned his B.S. degree in zoology in 1950. Duke later received his M.D. degree from Howard University in 1957, and worked in general medicine for forty-one years. He began as a medical officer at Fort Meade and worked at Walter Reed General Hospital before opening a private practice, which he operated for thirty-eight years until his retirement in 1998. An active member of several professional associations, Duke also enjoyed golfing in his spare time. He and his wife, Dolores, married in 1957, and had two children. He passed away on January 21, 2007 at the age of 83. | ||
