Summary:Politician and entrepreneur Fred L. Davis was born on May 8, 1934, in Memphis, Tennessee. Davis earned his B.S. degree from Tennessee State University in 1957, and joined the U.S. Army, serving two years in France. Upon his return, Davis formed his own insurance agency, Fred L. Davis Insurance, in 1967. At the time, he also served on the Memphis City Council, and was a supporter of the sanitary workers during their strike in 1968. That strike brought Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Memphis in April 1968, where he was assassinated. Davis' insurance company proved enormously successful over the years, and he was known as one one of the most respected businessmen in the community. He served on a number of boards of directors, and was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the National Council of Christians and Jews.
