Summary:Lawyer and civic leader Leola "Roscoe" Dellums was born in 1941, in Berkeley, California. While a student at San Francisco State University, she became the first African American on the homecoming court. Following graduation, Dellums began teaching English as a second language in 1966, and was involved in television. By 1972, she was reporting for a television station in Washington, D.C., and continued to do so until the 1980s. In 1983 Dellums also began working on Capitol Hill, first as an assistant to a California representative, and then as a consultant to the whole California delegation. Dellums also earned her J.D. degree from Georgetown University and began practicing law in 1993. In 1995, she opened her own firm. She has also written and has had a script produced by Disney Channel, The Color of Friendship. She has won numerous awards for her achievements, and has served on the boards of numerous organizations.
