Summary:Actor James Earl Jones was born on January 17, 1931 in Arkabutla, Mississippi. At age five, Jones' family moved to Dublin, Michigan for better educational opportunities. Jones found the transition traumatic and developed a stutter so severe he became virtually mute for about eight years. Jones graduated from Dickson High School in 1948 and earned his degree from the University of Michigan in 1955. He moved to New York City where he was accepted at the American Theatre Wing. In 1957, Jones landed his first Broadway role in The Egghead as an understudy for Lloyd Richards. He received his first Tony award in 1969 for his portrayal of boxer Jack Johnson in The Great White Hope. Jones starred in countless Broadway and off-Broadway productions. His many feature film credits include voicing Darth Vader in the Star Wars trilogy and Mufasa in Disney's The Lion King.
