Summary:Journalist and author Nathan McCall was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1954. He graduated from Manor High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, and received his B.A. degree in journalism from Norfolk State University in 1981. McCall's first job as a reporter was for the Virginian Pilot-Ledger Star in Norfolk, Virginia. He also worked at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution before landing a job at The Washington Post in 1989. In 1994, McCall published his autobiography, Makes Me Wanna Holler, which chronicled his journey from troubled youth to successful journalist. This was followed by a book of essays, What's Going On, in 1997, and his first novel, Them, in 2007. His books were the recipients of numerous awards and honors, including the Blackboard Book of the Year for 1995 and Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2007. McCall also served as a senior lecturer in the African American Studies Department at Emory University.
