| Summary: | R&B singer and songwriter Kim Lamont Owens (KEM) was born on July 23, 1967 in Nashville, Tennessee, and was raised in Detroit, Michigan. Upon graduation from high school, he dealt with homelessness, addiction and isolation from his family. Owens recovered in 1990 and took a job as a waiter and wedding singer. In 2001, he self-released his first album, Kemistry, and was signed to a five-record deal with Motown Records. He re-released Kemistry in 2003. Owens went on to record three subsequent albums: Album II in 2005, Intimacy in 2010, and 2012's What Christmas Means. In 2012, he founded Mack & Third, Inc. which presents the annual 'Mack & Third' event, an all-day free concert to benefit and recognize Detroit's homeless citizens. He won the Billboard Music Award for Top Adult R&B Single of the Year in 2005, and was nominated for six NAACP Image Awards and two Grammy Awards.
