Summary:Biologist Jeanette Jones was born on September 19, 1950 in Peach County, Fort Valley, Georgia. She attended the nearby Fort Valley State University where she received her B.S. degree in biology education in 1972. She received her M.S. degree in botany and mycology, specializing in medical mycology, in 1973 and her Ph.D. degree in 1976 from Ohio State University. Jones worked as an assistant professor of biology at Alabama A & M University in 1976 and was promoted to full professor of biology in 1986. In 1991, Jones served as Alabama A & M University's first female vice president for research and development. In 1992, she was appointed to the U.S. Army Science Board by U.S. Secretary of the Army Togo West. She served until 1998 and was reappointed in 2004 as a member of the U.S. Army Science Board. In 2004, Jones directed the Center for Biomedical, Behavioral and Environmental Research.
