| Summary: | Historian, academic administrator and foundation executive Earl Lewis was born on November 15, 1955 in Norfolk, Virginia. Lewis graduated from Concordia College in 1978 with his B.A. degree in history and psychology. He received his Ph.D. degree in history in 1984 from the University of Minnesota. After briefly working as an assistant professor at University of California, Berkeley, Lewis was hired at the University of Michigan in 1989 as a professor of history. He would go on to serve in a number of administrative positions at the University of Michigan until 2004 when he was hired as both professor of history and provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Emory University. Lewis became the highest-ranking African American administrator in the university's history. In 2013, he was hired as president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Lewis authored, co-authored or edited seven books and more than two dozen scholarly articles.
