Summary:Lawyer and state government appointee Myra McDaniel was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 13, 1932. She attended Philadelphia High School for Girls and received her B.A degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. McDaniel earned her J.D degree from the University of Texas Law School at Austin in 1975. She worked for the Attorney General's Office in Texas and became chief of the taxation division in 1979. McDaniel was appointed general counsel to the governor in 1983. In 1984, she was appointed the first African American woman in Texas history to serve as Secretary of State and the highest-ranked African American appointee in the history of Texas government. In 1987, McDaniel again entered private practice, and in 1995, she became the first African American woman to lead a major law firm as managing partner. McDaniel passed away on February 25, 2010 at age 77.
