Summary: | Lawyer and judge Nathaniel R. Jones was born on May 13, 1926 in Youngstown, Ohio. Jones graduated from South High School and earned his A.B. degree from Youngstown State University in 1951 and an LL.B. degree from Youngstown State University Law School in 1956. Jones served as executive director of the Fair Employment Practices Commission. In 1960, he became United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. He served as NAACP general counsel from 1969 to 1979 and argued several cases before the United States Supreme Court. Jones was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to the United States Court of Appeals in 1979 where he served as a senior judge. After retiring from the court in 2002, he became senior counsel for the Cincinnati office of Blank and Rome LLP. He taught law at Harvard University Law School. Jones received the NAACP's Spingarn Medal in 2016.
