Summary:Academic administrator Owen Douglas Nichols was born on April 8, 1929 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He graduated from Washington High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 until 1953, and he earned his B.S. degree in chemistry from Shaw University in 1955. Nichols received his M.S. degree in physical chemistry from Howard University in 1958. From 1958 until 1959, Nichols worked as associate professor of chemistry at South Carolina State College, and he was a research chemist at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory from 1959 until 1962. He worked as a physical science analyst for the Defense Documentation Center until 1966, when he joined the National Air Pollution Control Administration. In 1969, Nichols returned to Howard University where he served in various positions for nearly twenty years. He retired in 1988 as vice president for administration and secretary of the Board of Trustees.
