Summary:College president Calvin Burnett was born in Brinkley, Arkansas in 1932 and grew up in Davenport, Iowa. He earned his B. S. degrees in biology and political science; and his Ph.D. degree in social psychology from Saint Louis University. Burnett began his career working as a social psychology researcher at Saint Louis Hospital. He was director of research at the health and Welfare Council of Saint Louis. He was a teacher and administrator at the Catholic University of America and Southern Illinois University. Burnett was named president of Coppin State College in 1970, where he remained for thirty-two years. Under his leadership, the school quadrupled in size and expanded its curriculum. Burnett served on the board of the State of Maryland Civil Rights Commission and chaired the state NAACP Jubilee Committee. He appeared in several editions of Who's Who and received the Fullwood Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
