|a Government administrator Vernon Jones was born on October 31, 1960 in Laurel Hill, North Carolina. He earned his B.A. degree in business from North Carolina Central University and graduated from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government's Executive Program. Jones spent several years working in the telecommunications industry. In 1992, Jones was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives where he served for eight years. In 2000, he was elected the first African American and youngest CEO of DeKalb County. During his time in office, he oversaw more than 7,000 employees, managed a $2.6 billion budget, and implemented initiatives to bolster the economy and provide more services for residents of the county. Jones ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 2008. Jones remained active in a number of civic and community organizations, including Youth Prevention Services, Advocates for Seniors and the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia.
