| Summary: | Civic leader and archivist Warren Q. Marr II was born on July 31, 1916 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Marr studied journalism and printing at Wilberforce University. After college, Marr worked as a linotype operator at the St. Louis Argus, and from 1939 to 1942, at The Plaindealer in Kansas City, Kansas where he rose to assistant editor. He joined the business world working as a concert promoter. He later worked for the American Missionary Association and became interested in the internationally significant Amistad case. In 1966, Marr co-founded the Amistad Research Center located at Tulane University. It had collections of more than 10 million items. From 1968 to 1974, Marr served as editor for NAACP's The Crisis. After retiring, Marr helped found Amistad Affiliates, a nonprofit organization that commissioned a replica of the historic Amistad schooner. He was married to attorney Carmel Marr. Marr passed away on April 20, 2010 at age 93.
