Summary:Humanitarian Fr. George Clements was born in Chicago, Illinois January 26, 1932. After graduating from seminary and becoming ordained in 1957, Clements went to work in the Archdiocese of Chicago. In 1968, at a time when African American Catholics in Chicago were calling for a black priest, Clements was an ideal candidate. He became a full priest at Holy Angels Church in 1969. Clements used his pulpit to preach equality and justice, and sheltered members of the Black Panthers from police violence. In 1981, Clements became the first priest to adopt a child. His effort encouraged the adoption of African-American children. His One Church-One Child program resulted in the adoption of more than 100-thousand children in America. . He also founded One Church-One Addict and One Church-One Inmate initiatives that offered similar faith-based support for those in need. He received numerous honors. NBC made a film about him in 1987, The Father Clements Story.
