| Summary: | Civil rights lawyer and nonprofit executive Vernon Jordan was born on August 15, 1935 in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from DePauw University and received his J.D. degree in 1960 from Howard University. In 1961, Jordan made history when he helped to integrate the University of Georgia by personally escorting student Charlayne Hunter-Gault to the school. Over the next ten years, Jordan served as Georgia field secretary for the NAACP, director of the Voter Education Project for the Southern Regional Council and head of the United Negro College Fund. Between 1971 and 1981, Jordan oversaw the transformation of the National Urban League into a business organization as its president and CEO. In 1981, after an attempt on his life, Jordan left the Urban League and went into private practice. Jordan was on President Clinton's transition team from 1992 to 1993. From 2000, he served as senior managing director with Lazard Freres & Co.
