Summary:Actor Billy Porter was born on September 21, 1969 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Pittsburgh School for the Creative and Performing Arts and, in 1991, from Carnegie Mellon University's School of Drama. Porter's first Broadway role was in the ensemble of Miss Saigon, one of the twenty longest-running shows in Broadway history. His early career included winning the 1992 edition of Star Search, acting in the 1994 Broadway revival of Grease, and writing and starring in Ghetto Superstar at the Public Theatre. Porter originated the role of Lola in the Broadway production of Kinky Boots, for which he won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. His semi-autobiographical play While I Yet Live premiered in 2014. He played Aubrey Lyles in the 2016 musical Shuffle Along. He supported the Ali Forney Center for homeless LGBT youth.
