Summary:Visual artist and author Synthia Saint James was born in the Bronx, New York on February 11, 1949. She started attending public school in New York, but her family relocated to Los Angeles where she completed high school. She began her career as an artist in 1969 when she sold her first commissioned works in New York City. Subsequently, her works have been seen in galleries around the world including exhibitions at the MuseĢe Des Duncans, the Chicago Art Institute, and Cosmopolitan Artists. In addition, her works are in numerous private collections and on book covers for works by Alice Walker, Terry McMillan, and Julia Boyd. In 1997, Saint James was commissioned by the United States Postal Service to design the first Kwanzaa stamp. The recipient of numerous awards, she written more than a dozen children's books, two books of poetry and prose, and a multi-cultural cookbook.
