Summary:Actress and singer Diahann Carroll was born in in 1935, in the Bronx, New York. After modeling as a teenager in New York City, she made her Broadway debut in House of Flowers. Her performance prompted producer Richard Rodgers to create No Strings for Carroll, which won Carroll a Tony Award. She also starred in the award winning play Agnes of God. Carroll became the first black actress to star in her own series in 1968 when Julia aired on NBC. She earned an Emmy Award nomination in the show's first year. In 1984, Carroll became the first black actress to star in the nighttime series Dynasty. Her film work includes Carmen Jones, Paris Blues, Porgy and Bess, Now I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Claudine, which earned her an Oscar nomination. Carroll filmed her stage show Diahann Carroll: The Lady. The Music. The Legend, for PBS in 2010.
