Summary:Corporate executive Gerard Peterson was born in Hartford, Connecticut on September 10, 1932. After attending the University of Connecticut, where he earned his B.A. degree in economics, Peterson went to work for Aetna Life and Casualty in Hartford. There he began as an administrator in the corporate data processing department before moving up to assistant secretary at the corporate level. From 1965-1966, Peterson was an executive-on-loan to Plans for Progress, part of President Johnson's Great Society, and was again on loan from 1969-1970 to the National Alliance of Business. In 1970, Peterson was hired by Stanford University as an assistant dean, where he remained for three years before returning to Aetna, as marketing director for their HMO and later the general marketing manager. In 1983, he took over as manager of the Hartford Civic Center, and under his leadership, the Center experienced unprecedented growth and success.
