|a Choreographer and artistic director Joseph "Joel" Hall was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 20, 1949. Hall began his dance career under the tutelage of Ed Parrish in 1968. The following year, he moved to New York City where he studied under Denise Jefferson. Returning to Chicago, he earned his B.A. degree in sociology from Northeastern Illinois University in 1972. In 1974, Hall and Joseph Ehrenberg co-founded the Chicago City Theatre Company which later came under the direction of the Joel Hall Dance Center. Hall choreographed the 50th Anniversary presentation of Duke Ellington's musical, Jump for Joy. Hall created more than forty ballets for his company and toured internationally. He also gained wide recognition as a jazz dance instructor, teaching classes at universities throughout the United States and the United Kingdom.
